About Blackwater Mine

Situated 73 kilometres south-east of Emerald, Blackwater is the second-largest open-cut metallurgical coal mine in the Bowen Basin. This long-life operation began in 1967 and has grown to become one of the longest coal mines in the Southern Hemisphere, with a strike length of 70 kilometres. Blackwater extracts high quality metallurgical and thermal coal for the export market using truck and shovel, as well as loader and dragline. 

About the Role

A new, site-based opportunity has become available for a Specialist Environment to join our Environment Team at Blackwater Mine. Reporting to the Superintendent Environment, provide subject matter expertise in the design and establishment of environment standards, procedures and systems while supporting line management for environmental risk assessments, event investigation, field leadership and compliance. You will utilise your excellent relationship building and people skills to deliver a wide range of environmental services and initiatives.  

  

What You’ll Do

  • Ensure conformance with our Whitehaven STRIVE values and relevant statutory obligations through the provision of technical environmental advice.
  • Implement and provide governance of the Environment Management System, including review of environmental procedures and plans, verification and internal reporting of compliance activities.
  • Lead environment monitoring programs and management plans, including environment sampling and data collection, verification and reporting of data.
  • Coordinate and execute the permit to disturb process, including performance to plan activities.
  • Manage contractors and consultants associated with routine environmental activities and specific environmental projects.

 

What You’ll Bring

  • Tertiary Qualifications in Environmental Management, Environmental Science or Environmental Engineering.
  • Previous on-site experience within the resources industry. 
  • Experience in addressing legislative state and federal environmental requirements. 
  • Ability to build consultative and influential relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. 
  • Sound GIS capabilities will also be highly regarded.
